Habit Hacking: How Busy Working Moms Can Create Positive Habits & Routines

Julie Wenzlick here, your fellow corporate working mom. Today, it’s all about creating systems to make your habits subconscious, especially for working moms like us who want to prioritize well-being without it taking over our entire day. Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty. In a previous episode, I talked about the difference between habits, routines, and systems.

Just a quick refresher before we get into my habit hacks….

  1. Routine is the regular way you do things consciously.

  2. Habit is the unconscious action you do almost without thinking.

  3. Systems are the organized set of ideas or theories around the habit and routine.

Consistency and Reminders are Key

So, let’s build on those habits. As we’re about three weeks into the new year, it’s crucial to check in on those intentions. Studies show that around 80% of people give up on their goals by mid-February, and we definitely don’t want to be part of that statistic. It’s tough, especially with sick kids and the chaos of daily activities. That’s why I hack my habits to make them a non-event.

Daily Checklists

First up, checklists are your best friend. I prefer a recurring checklist on my phone, integrated with Microsoft Launcher. It keeps me on track with daily routines like AM supplements, outdoor time, Bible listening, probiotics, evening anti-inflammatory, and daily meditation or stretching. Without this checklist, these habits can easily slip away. You can also use a dry erase board, a pretty checklist in Canva, or even jot it down in your planner.

Habit Stacking

Now, this is a fantastic time to habit stack – the ultimate mom multitasking hack. Link a new habit with an existing one, making it seamless. For instance, listen to the Bible while walking or do meditation while stretching. It saves time and is incredibly effective.

Phone alarms are another handy tool. Set reminders for winding down or getting outside. They act as gentle nudges to keep you aligned with your intentions.

And let’s not forget about the weekends. Remind yourself that habits are seven days a week, not just Monday to Friday. One of my subconscious habit hacks is creating a weekend list every Friday. It helps me focus on family and home intentions while still enjoying joyful moments.

As we wrap up, remember the Better Everyday 5 Habits:

  1. MOVEMENT 30 – Intentionally move your body for 30 minutes a day

  2. TIDY 15 – Spend 15 minutes tidying an area of your house that you don’t normally touch everyday

  3. ONE THING FOR YOU – What is one thing you are doing for you today?

  4. THANKFUL 24 – What is one thing you are thankful for in the last 24 hours?

  5. DAILY FOCUS 3 – What are the three tasks that are a priority for you today?

These form the foundation, and while they may not be on my phone checklist, they are ingrained habits for me. For a deeper dive into these five habits, check out episode 2.

Creating positive habits is all about progress, not perfection. I hope these tips from one busy mom to another infuse a bit more magic into your daily routine. Embrace the power of habit stacking, sprinkle in some self-care, and savor those moments of gratitude. You’re doing an incredible job, and your journey is uniquely yours. That’s a wrap for another episode of the Being Better Everyday Podcast! Until next time, take care!
